How much do removalists cost in Sydney in 2026?

Ask five Sydney removalists for a price and you will usually get five different kinds of answer: an hourly rate, a minimum booking, a fixed price, a price per cubic metre and a vague promise to call you back. Comparing them is hard because they are not measuring the same thing. This guide breaks down what a Sydney move actually costs in 2026, and what you should check before you sign anything.

Typical Sydney removal costs by home size

These are sample ranges drawn from metro moves under 25 km, with standard access and no specialty items. They include GST, travel from the depot and basic wrapping materials.

• Studio or one bedroom apartment: $550 to $900
• Two bedroom apartment or townhouse: $850 to $1,400
• Three bedroom house: $1,300 to $2,200
• Four bedroom house or larger: $1,850 to $3,200

The spread inside each range comes almost entirely from three things: how much furniture you own, how easy it is to get that furniture to the truck, and how far the truck needs to travel.

Hourly rates versus fixed prices

Hourly rates in Sydney typically sit between $139 and $199 per hour for two removalists and a truck, usually with a two or three hour minimum and a call-out fee of one hour. On paper that looks cheaper than a fixed price. In practice, the clock starts when the truck leaves the depot, not when it reaches your door, and every delay on the day, from a lift booking to a clearway, is billed to you.

A fixed price moves that risk to the removalist. The company has to estimate your job properly, because any extra time is their cost. For most homes over one bedroom, a genuine fixed price ends up lower than the final hourly invoice, and it is always easier to budget for.

If a fixed-price quote has lots of conditions attached, it is really an hourly quote wearing a costume.

What pushes a quote up

Stairs and long carries

A third floor walk-up in Bondi can add 90 minutes to a two bedroom move. Homes set below the street on the Northern Beaches can add even more. Good removalists ask about this before they quote, rather than discovering it on the day.

Heavy and specialty items

Pianos, marble tables, gym equipment, pool tables and large safes need extra people and specialist equipment. Expect $250 to $700 on top of a standard move for an upright piano, depending on stairs.

Timing

Fridays, Saturdays and the last week of each month are the busiest days in Sydney because leases and settlements cluster around them. Midweek moves in the middle of the month are often 10 to 15 percent cheaper.

Costs people forget to budget for

• Packing materials, if they are not included
• Council parking permits in the City of Sydney and Inner West
• Strata bond or lift booking fees
• End-of-lease cleaning to get your bond back
• Storage if your settlement dates do not line up

How to compare quotes fairly

Give every company the same written inventory and the same access details, including stairs, lifts and parking at both ends. Ask each one to state the crew size, truck size, insurance limit and exactly what could change the price. Then compare like with like.
